What do I know?

- Montaigne, (on the position of the skeptic)

If this be global warming, let us make the most of it!

Cleverer men than I debate endlessly the cause and effect of melting icecaps – I know little and understand less. Once we wintered in Florida; now Florida comes to us. On New Year’s Eve I brought the last rosebud inside the house, where it blooms today.

Our days are as an Arizona winter: frosty mornings warming to sunny middays, ideal for rambling and exploring. We see all things as they are now and know nature in all her naked glory. Last week we surprised a resplendent sycamore shedding her last leaf.

Bledsoe Sycamore – Jack Masters, Photographer

None of us can look directly at the sun, only at its reflected light. Light is seen only in contrast to dark, of which there is aplenty in January – the month when afternoons slip early away to long, cold nights. In January we count our days so recklessly spent, and reckon how many may be left. An old friend passes away, while I savor life and light.

January is a time of contrasts of light and dark, a time for resolutions. Resolutions are frozen intentions. Unless thawed to action, resolutions soon pass their sell-by date.

But intentions swarm our mornings, chirruping early birds, clamoring to be fed. Born of necessity and our will, they are children of time and soon disappear, like the leaves of the sycamore, withered and washed downstream by the currents of time.

The best of our intentions, we call Hope. Hope, along with Faith and Love, is one of the primary virtues. While Faith has a determined face, Love bends over us like a warm, caring mother. But Hope is an innocent, happy child, beckoning us to join her in a future better even than we can imagine, in the general dance of life
